Aside from visiting Hachiko in Shibuya, I also made my way to Kiddy Land in Harajuku. Kiddy Land is a seven story monument to Japanese notions of cuteness; er, I mean toy store. I was not quite prepared for the onslaught. The first floor seemed to be mostly cell phone accessories. In Japan, it's not unusual to have a giant tangle of cartoon characters and other trinkets hanging from your cell phone's strap handle. This trend hasn't quite caught on in the US.

What surprised me the most on this floor though, was an original product from a Boulder Colorado based company that I've never seen in the US. Check this out.
It's a phone case. By Croc. Shaped like a Croc. I think they certainly got the cuteness factor right for the market.

Next was the Hello Kitty floor. Yes, that's right, one of the seven floors is all Hello Kitty. I've never seen so much pink and white in my life. It was like cotton candy had eaten too much of itself and thrown up. There were dozens of different Hello Kitty cell phone trinkets and more stuffed Hello Kitty's than any girl could want.
It seems that there are some things popular in Japan that have cooled off a little here. In Landmark Tower there was a Snoopy store, and at Kiddy Land Snoopy had half a floor to himself. Not bad for a character born in the 50s whose creator has died. Now let me make it clear, Snoopy is the focal point, not the Peanuts. To be sure, there are a couple products peppered about that aren't Snoopy, but those are mostly Woodstock. This picture ought to drive home his popularity.
There were also some characters who I thought had been completely forgotten in the US, like Mr. Men and Little Miss. However, when I searched on the web, it turns out that they have their own show on Cartoon Network. And here I thought they'd been left in the '70s with Love Is... and bell bottoms.

There were of course, showings by popular Japanese characters unknown in the US. Such as Rilakkuma and my personal favorite, Domo-kun, mascot of Japanese broadcaster NHK. He looks like a fuzzy brown cube with big teeth, lives with an elderly rabbit in a cave, and can't eat apples because of a quirk in his DNA. Also, he farts when he's nervous/upset. There was also almost a whole floor dedicated to characters from Miyazaki's animated films.

Also, I found my first bit of truly strange English signage. This was posted in the Men's room above the urinals. In a toy store.
I know that what they're after here is keeping the restroom clean (somehow), but boy did it get mangled in translation. I won't even go into the double entendres this conjures up. I'm trying to maintain a G rated site here.
